About My Own Home

Respect. Dignity. Pride.

These are some of the things that come from simply living in your own home. Many adults with a disability in Kalamazoo County have been isolated from this common part of the American dream. Because they have been denied the opportunity to experience the pride of being in charge of their own destiny, many have been stripped of their respect and dignity.

My Own Home (MOH), and affiliate of Community Living Options, provides individuals with disabilities and their children the opportunity of a lifetime with assistance and opportunities for obtaining suitable housing.

My Own Home's core purpose is to provide individuals with disabilities and their families with assistance and options for obtaining and maintaining suitable, safe housing. A secondary goal is to provide home ownership opportunities for persons with a disability throughout Kalamazoo County. Tenants pay rent based on a percentage of their income. My Own Home staff members then work with tenants on routine home maintenance issues. Individuals who have stability and confidence in their own abilities learn to rely more on themselves. Results: A stronger Kalamazoo community for all individuals.

MOH builds community by:
  • Offering alternative living options to families of persons with a disability or independent disabled individuals.
  • Breaking the cycle of "crisis living" for persons with a disability and their families by offering stable housing and comprehensive services.
  • Decreasing the number of homeless persons with disabilities in Kalamazoo County by providing empowering living situations.
  • Teaching tenants important budgeting and maintenance skills.
  • Increasing the number of renovated homes in Kalamazoo County.
  • Strengthening neighborhoods by maintaining clean, well-kept properties.
